About me
Mikaël Thompson de Grisvaldi, PhD
Professor & Genealogy research professional
I am a trained professional researcher (PhD) specialising in historical documents and genealogical records. I have 25+ years experience in archival research and deciphering old handwritten documents across multiple languages, and 30 years of first-hand experience in genealogical research. I am fluent in reading and translating French, Latin, and Italian into English – and I can explain what each document means for you in plain English.
I know only too well the typical pitfalls and mistakes that many genealogists (and AI) make, because they simply do not understand the historical-cultural contexts (e.g. border changes, political shifts, place-name changes, migration patterns, and religious practices) like a professional historian does. And because of this lack of context, such individuals often make incorrect assumptions and end up going in the wrong direction. The result? Time wasted chasing a the wrong lead in the wrong province, state, or even country until you hit the inevitable dead end.
My specialised training and expertise helps you avoid all of that. I am an active university professor and I deal with this kind of research all day, every day, so I know my way around old records, mis-spelled names, and difficult documents pretty darn well.
